Thanksgiving:The Words of President Abraham Lincoln

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

1 Chronicles 16:8 "Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon His name, make known His deeds among the people"

It seems as though there has been a great effort made over the last decade to hinder anyone from a child on up from freely talking about Almighty God whom we are thankful to for every good thing in our life.

A poem on Thanksgiving from a child in school today might read like this:

Thanks You Know Who…
The pilgrims came here seeking freedom of you know what.
When they landed, they gave thanks to you know who.
Because of them, we can worship each Sunday, you know where.

May we please on this Thanksgiving remember one of our past great leaders who had no reservations about speaking of the thanks and prayer due to Almighty God who has blessed our nation.

These are the words of President Abraham Lincoln, April 30, 1863

"We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. We have been preserved, the many years, in peace and prosperity. We have grown in numbers, wealth and power, as no other nation has ever grown. But we have forgotten God. We have forgotten the gracious hand which preserved us in peace and multiplied and enriched and strengthened us; and we have vainly imagined, in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own.

Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self- sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to God that made us! It behooves us, then to humble ourselves before the offended Power, to confess our national sins, and to pray for clemency and forgiveness.

With this attitude, may we plan something with those we love, to give bold repentance and thanksgiving to our God who has blessed our great nation and is the only one who can put it back on track!" - President Abraham Lincoln, April 30, 1863

Happy Thanksgiving from the Burt family to each and every one of you!

God bless you richly.

Two of the Greatest Qualities in Life Are:

Patience and Wisdom

Small Containers of Enormous Power

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

I was out on our deck praying this morning. My view has now changed from a beautiful garden, to a sleeping and dead garden for the winter. I was thinking about how I might put a Christmas tree out there just to bring some life to it. As I was thinking about that, I flashed back to a childhood moment. It was after Christmas. Everyone would take their dying Christmas trees and put them out in the snow on the curb. The garbage company would make a special collection of those trees and dispose of them. We loved that time because we used to go out and light them. They were dried out pine trees and they would go up in fire in a roaring flash, burn for about three minutes, and then go out. It was a quick and intense fire and we’d run from tree to tree to get a bunch of them going at the same time. It never caused any damage (that we were aware of) and was a highlight of our Christmas season.

That thought reminded me of something I had just recently heard someone say. They were proclaiming that they might have a horrible medical condition – saying that just because of one symptom that had recently experienced. Not because they’d had this problem on going. Not because they had been to a doctor. Just because they’d experienced one symptom. It made me think; people have no idea that their words are containers of power. They are seeds that grow. They get lodged in the mind and heart. They can lead to other bad thoughts. Fear can take root, and the very thing they were carelessly proclaiming can be launched in their life. Think that sounds crazy? You know the story of Job. Listen to what Job said; “What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me.” (Job 3:25)

That might sound like an exaggeration to you, but maybe you need to learn more about words. Hebrews 11:3 says, “By faith we understand that the entire universe was formed at God's command, that what WE NOW SEE DID NOT come from anything that can be seen.” What this is saying is that God’s words created the world we live in! What were His commands? You remember in Genesis - over and over we read, “God SAID, “Let there be… and there was…” Words spoken in faith by the Lord are what created and shaped our world. Mankind is careless with words but God is not. He knows the power of words. Words were His creation. Matthew 5:18 amplifies this point saying, “For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled." God’s law was His word and He said that His words would never pass away!

God teaches us in Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

God teaches us that our tongue can bring healing or destroy. Proverbs 15:4 says, "The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit." Do you see that power in the tongue?

Our words can create, shape, inspire, encourage, and bring healing. God desires to speak through us to bless others. (Like I pray that I am doing with you today!) We see that in 2 Samuel 23:2. "The Spirit of the Lord speaks through me; His words are upon my tongue."

And God instructs us that part of His measurement for spiritual growth and maturity is based on our words. James 3:2 says,“We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man – complete in mental and moral character, and is able to keep his whole body in check.”
An old dried out Christmas tree can light up like a torch in a minute. Our words can torch a life bringing hurt and destruction or they can minister life and bring healing.

Be led by the Spirit of God as you choose your words. Pause and yield to His leading. Practice that continuously and you will have learned something extremely valuable from God that far to few do. It will bless you beyond belief but even more importantly, it will bless others! It will because your tongue will be a source of healing and life to others.

Isaiah 50:4 “The Sovereign Lord has given me an instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being taught.”

Defeating Our Fears!

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

One morning, my granddaughter Madeline who was on a sleepover, came into my bedroom early and said, "Grampa, will you get up an read me a Bible story?" I got up and first read her a book about a little boy who was scared of getting a shot at the doctor’s office. Then I read her the story about another boy who should have been afraid but wasn't. We read the story of David and Goliath.

When you read the story of David and Goliath you can see that David was different from every other soldier. When he heard the voice of the enemy mocking God, righteous indignation rose up on the inside of him and out came the words, "Who is this pagan Philistine anyway, that he is allowed to defy the armies of the living God?"(1 Samuel 17:26) His indignation and words led him to action. He wanted to go defeat Goliath in battle. David responded, "You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord Almighty—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! And everyone will know that the Lord does not need weapons to rescue his people. It is his battle, not ours. The Lord will give you to us!" 1 Samuel 17:45-47

David was fearless and zealous, but because he was a boy, he didn’t get a lot of support. 1 Samuel 17:33 says, "Don't be ridiculous!" Saul replied. "There is no way you can go against this Philistine. You are only a boy, and he has been in the army since he was a boy!"

David explained to Saul; "Your servant has been keeping his father's sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the Lord be with you."

We have all faced fears and Goliaths over the course of our life. They seem to come too often and try to overwhelm way too many moments. Those fears try to grow and terrorize us!

Fears can be complicated or we can uncomplicate them. In prayer, we can simply state what they are and lay them at the Lord's feet. We can ask Him to show us how to defeat them and let the Lord speak to us through His Word. Over time our faith and trust will grow strong and we will also defeat the Goliaths that surface in our life.

Fears will always attempt to invade our life. It would be good to truly defeat them in the faith and trust of the Lord!

2 Samuel 22:31-34 "As for God, his way is perfect. All the Lord's promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection. For who is God except the Lord? Who but our God is a solid rock? God is my strong fortress; He has made my way safe. He makes me as surefooted as a deer, leading me safely along the mountain heights."

Israeli Company Formulates Vaccine That Can Kill Cancer

An Israeli company formulates a drug that ‘trains' the immune system to seek and destroy malignant cells that have already invaded the body.

As we get older, modern medicine will help more of us live with cancer rather than die from it. That's the assumption behind a vaccine to treat cancer, being developed by a pharmaceutical company in Israel.

Vaxil BioTherapeutics' main product, ImMucin, is now in advanced clinical trials at Hadassah University Medical Center in Jerusalem.

CEO Julian Levy tells ISRAEL21c that this therapeutic vaccine doesn't prevent cancer from invading, but activates and enhances the body's natural immune system to seek and destroy cancer cells already present in the body, such as those lingering after cancer surgery.

Malignant cells normally get out of control by tricking the immune system not to notice them, a strategy that works especially well in older people because immune systems get less efficient with age.
The vaccine is currently being tested against a blood cancer called multiple myeloma. However, Vaxil's scientific breakthrough is based on a drug platform, VaxHit, which can be tailored to treat not only 90 percent of cancers, he says, but also diseases such as tuberculosis.

This disease is cropping up in developing nations as existing vaccines are proving less and less effective.

"Two billion are affected by the pathogen," says Levy. "Ten percent will develop the active disease. And while TB can be treated by drugs, it takes several months and it can be brutal."

According to Levy, the vaccine presents no side effects, and can be taken indefinitely, like vitamins. ImMucin is designed to overcome cancer cells that mutate, rendering other drugs ineffective.

A hit for long-term survival

Depending on the outcome of clinical trials, the ImMucin vaccine could be ready and marketable within the next six years. It could have major implications for the treatment of leading killers like prostate and breast cancer.

New studies in the United States suggest that fewer men will go under the scalpel to remove their cancerous prostate gland, and simply live with the usually slow-growing cancer. Vaxil could be a helpful tool in prolonging lives of these patients.

The specific molecular markers on most cancer cells, which ImMucin "trains" the immune system's T-cells to find and kill, were discovered by the company's founder, Dr. Lior Carmon, a biotechnology entrepreneur with a doctorate in immunology from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot.

Vaxil was founded in 2006, and the company of five is currently based in Nes Ziona, Israel. This year, Vaxil signed a memorandum of understanding to merge its business into Sheldonco, an Israeli company traded on the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange.

Your Access to Great Blessing!

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

Living here in Minnesota, I know that I'm not too far away from the day where snow will blanket our state. People like snow for different reasons. One thing I love about a fresh snow is how beautiful it is to go for a run in. Everything is covered with pure virgin white snow. The trees, especially the pines glisten white and almost everywhere you look, you see this breathtakingly beautiful majestic picture of fresh snow.

When Spring comes and the snow has finally melted, the opposite of what I just described is true. The litter that has accumulated all winter but has been hidden by snow is now revealed everywhere. It reminds me how we feel when we lose sight of the fact that God has forgiven our sins through Jesus Christ. When we drift away from the Lord, we begin to forget His robe of righteousness that He, by His doing, chose to place upon the ones who would receive Jesus as their Lord and Savior. That robe of righteousness covers our sins and shortcomings like a fresh blanket of snow covers the litter on the ground. Isaiah 1:18 says it like this:"Come now, and let us reason together," Says the Lord, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow..." And Isa 61:10 says, “I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness…” This robe of righteousness from the Lord helps us not to see our own human imperfections and failings.

When we draw near to the Lord, it's good to reflect on what Jesus did for us. He put this robe of righteousness upon us so that when He looked at us He would see someone that was made pure before Him. This is an awesome revelation of His love and the gift of His love. It is our challenge to become Christ-like. Despite our best efforts, we will sin and blow it. He has made provision for sincere repentance as we go through the life long process of cleaning up the filthiness of our flesh. 1 John 1:9 says, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."

As we sincerely work at this, the Lord does not want us to walk through life sin conscience but instead righteousness conscience. Repentance is good and necessary, but because there are times when we feel like we are always repenting, we can get down on ourselves seeing the litter of our sins. It can make us want to give up. When we live in the spirit of thankfulness for God’s gift of righteousness, our thankfulness will actually translate into spiritual strength and a greater desire to live life more righteously. Transformation will happen and life will look more beautiful because the litter is covered by the snowfall of righteousness. When you understand that this is the way God sees you, then you will “…come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy and we will find grace to help us when we need it.” Hebrews 4:16

God’s covenant of promised blessing to Abraham and his future seed reaches all the way into our lives today through that faith. Galatians 3:14 says,”God redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”

The promises of blessings to God’s children abound throughout the Bible. Your robe of righteousness allows you to access them. Thank God because you truly believe these promises reach into every area of your life. Thank God and pray boldly in faith that they will prevail in your life despite contrary circumstances.

God wants to supernaturally bless you. His promises are accessed through your faith. Have faith because He has made you righteous through Jesus and that is His doing, not yours!

Psalm 138:2 (NLT) “I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I will give thanks to your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness, because your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.”

Peace and Freedom in the Midst of Havoc

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

Imagine you had a friend sitting in jail serving a sentence. He'd been there for 10 years depressed and dreaming about what it's like on the outside. One day, a guard comes to him, opens the door and says, "The rest of your time has been excused and you are free to go." Imagine your good friend whom you have loved, prayed for, and often thought about, staying right there in that cell because he didn’t believe the guard. Imagine that somehow in his mind he just couldn't get it that he was truly excused and free to go, and so he stayed there. You'd probably go to convince him that it was true and that he was really free.

In Jesus Christ, we have been made free! In John 8:36 Jesus said, Many of those that listened to and dared to believe Jesus’ words got healed, got delivered from devils, got free from sin, and their eyes were opened to see life through God’s eyes.

In Acts 3:7-8 we see the response that you would imagine when someone had been set free by Jesus. It says, "Taking him by the right hand, he helped him up, and instantly the man's feet and ankles became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went with them into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God."

Jesus gave us His Word saying that to us it would become "daily bread." Imagine that! Imagine a daily feeding from God that has the power to free us – to build our faith and heal us and to deliver us from the devil's lies, strategies, and strongholds that hold us back from living powerfully for Him. Imagine the Lord using you to be an agent of His anointing and power to those that would otherwise not be touched by God. Imagine others being freed and changed in some way because you shared the very words that empowered you earlier in the day! Wow!

When Jesus taught His disciples to pray, He said, pray “Give us this day our daily bread.” He wasn’t talking about praying for food or material needs. He was talking about letting God’s word come alive so that it could create faith in their heart for the day! He wanted them to develop a heart like David’s such as we see in Psalm 27:4 “One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in his temple.”

Jesus declared Himself the word of God and concerning it said that this: “The word of God is living and powerful in its effectiveness. It is sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

The world is not always a nice place and sometimes you can really feel trapped in it. But, you can be free from it. You can let the Word of God speak the promises of His love, His help, and His grace to carry you through your day! God cares about every hair on your head and detail of your life. He does because He loves you! He guides you in your path, He directs your steps, and gives you the grace and wisdom for every situation. But, it starts with you believing and that happens by you having faith. Faith is built by hearing the Word of God and believing it. It’s what springs you from your jail cell. It is Jesus’ voice you are hearing that says, "The rest of your time has been excused and you are free to go – only believe!”

Hebrews 10:39 “But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.”
