Faith Can Move Mountains

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

Mark 11:23 ”For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be removed, and be cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he said shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he said.”

Faith Can Move Mountains
(Author Unknown)

A small congregation in the foothills of the Great Smokies built a new sanctuary on a piece of land willed to them by a church member. Ten days before the new church was to open, the local building inspector informed the pastor that the parking lot was inadequate for the size of the building. Until the church doubled the size of the parking lot, they would not be able to use the new sanctuary.

Unfortunately, the church with its undersized lot had used every inch of their land except for the mountain against which it had been built. In order to build more parking spaces, they would have to move the mountain out of the back yard. Undaunted, the pastor announced the next Sunday morning that he would meet that evening with all members who had "mountain moving faith." They would hold a prayer session asking God to remove the mountain from the back yard and to somehow provide enough money to have it paved and painted before the scheduled opening dedication service the following week. At the appointed time, 24 of the congregation's 300 members assembled for prayer. They prayed for nearly three hours. At ten o'clock the pastor said the final "Amen." "We'll open next Sunday as scheduled," he assured everyone. "God has never let us down before, and I believe He will be faithful this time too."

The next morning as he was working in his study there came a loud knock at his door. When he called "come in," a rough looking construction foreman appeared, removing his hard hat as he entered. "Excuse me, Reverend. I'm from Acme Construction Company over in the next county. We're building a huge new shopping mall over there and we need some fill dirt. Would you be willing to sell us a chunk of that mountain behind the church? We'll pay you for the dirt we remove and pave all the exposed area free of charge, if we can have it right away. We can't do anything else until we get the dirt in and allow it to settle properly."

The little church was dedicated the next Sunday as originally planned and there were far more members with "mountain moving faith" on opening Sunday than there had been the previous week!

Mark 10:27 "And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible."

The Crocodile Feeding in Norway

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

The Crocodile Feeding in Norway
by Peggy Shapiro

Peggy Shapiro is Chicago Community Coordinator for StandWithUs

Norway, which has a sordid history of feeding the anti-Semitic, anti-Israel beast, woke up this morning to the shock of the Islamist beast feeding on Norwegian blood.

Norwegian police have now confirmed that a bomb by an Al Qaeda-linked group caused an explosion at the government headquarters in Oslo, and reports are now coming in of a simultaneous attack at a youth camp. The body count is not yet in, but most of Norway must be asking "Why us? Haven't we been sufficiently anti-Semitic and anti-Israel?"

If anti-Israel sentiment were a shield against Islamist attacks, Norway should have had an Iron Dome. Rather than oppose the growing internal threat from radical Islam, left-wing Norwegian government parties have chosen to appease them by fighting Israel. The list of anti-Israel initiatives is far too long to mention, but some highlights include Kristin Halvorsen , the Norwegian Minister of Finance, proposing a boycott of Israel

Norway later stepped back on the "official" boycott which had turned into an embarrassment; however, boycotters were not dissuaded. The province of South-Trøndelag officially called for an economic boycott of Israel and it received the support of all three Norwegian governing parties - the Labour Party (Ap) of Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Halvorsen's SV and the environmentalist Center Party . Just this year the congress of the Electrician and IT workers union in Norway unanimously voted in favor of a resolution calling for boycott of Israeli goods, a ban on Norwegian arms trade with the Israeli military, and end to all research cooperation.

Norway's notorious boycott is not only of Israeli products but of any thoughts which might be deemed pro-Israel. Alan Dershowitz came face to face with the anti-Israel blockade when he was denied permission to speak at three major Norwegian universities, which had warmly welcomed professors who had demonized Israel.

Dershowitz points out that the boycott against cultural pro-Israeli academics assumes that "all Jews are presumed to be pro-Israel unless they have a long track record of anti-Israel rhetoric" and that "every single inch of Israel is occupied Palestinian land."

Should boycotts prove insufficient to placate the Muslim world, Norway's Socialist Left Party said that it was open to the idea of Norwegian military action against Israel: "The international community's credibility in the confrontation with the Qaddafi regime is weakened when there is no reaction against other states in the region that commit assaults on civilians."

Norwegians eagerness to appease their Muslim countrymen and the entire Islamic world has poured fire on the fuel of anti-Semitism. Life has become more difficult for the tiny population (about 2,000) of Jews in Oslo. Jewish children have been advised not to wear Stars of David or yarmulkes to avoid attacks. Kosher butchering is illegal. On two nights in January 2009, Norway's Jews experienced a new "Kristallnacht" (Nazi night of broken glass) when hundreds of violent Muslims vandalized block after block while police stood by pathetically weak.

A June publication of a study "Religious racism shocks officials," 8 June 2011. ordered by the Oslo municipality on racism and anti-Semitism revealed shocking Jewish persecution, especially of young people. In an analysis of the study, Dr. Manfred Gerstenfeld, Chairman of the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs and author of "Anti-Semitism in Norway; Behind the Humanitarian Mask", decries that Kristin Halvorsen, one of the most virulent anti-Semites in Norway, is in charge of researching anti-Semitism in Norway. Gerstenfeld concludes, "This will probably serve to be another example of how arsonists may now simultaneously be taught to become firemen." Gerstenfeld directly links the rise in anti-semitism in Oslo schools "to the extreme anti-Israel hate mongering in Norway expressed by government ministers, politicians, media, trade unions, academics, certain Church leaders and others."

Today a bewildered Oslo is learning a truth they might have learned in 1939: the beast of fanatacism grows more insatiable with every act of appeasement.

A Powerful Testimony of Love From Jew to Christian

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

In the previous post, I shared with you that I recently returned from our Annual Christians United for Israel (CUFI)Washington DC Summit with over 7,000 in attendance from around the country and world. I am the Minnesota State Director for CUFI. I then posted the article "Standing With Israel" by Peggy Shaprio, a Jewish friend that is very thankful for what we are accomplishing through Christians United for Israel. Today I want to let you read a short letter from two Jewish people that were invited by Peggy to our Christians United for Israel (CUFI) Conference in Washington DC this past week, and to our Night to Honor Israel in Washington DC. As a Christian, you might not have known the fear and turmoil Jewish people have felt and been persecuted by from Christians. That is now changing!

Dear Pastor Tim,
I brought 18 people with me to witness CUFI with their own eyes. Here is one of the responses I received from a couple who had grown up and spent their early adulthoods in the former Soviet Untion. Their gratitude for CUFI is shared by all of us.
Blessings for what you do.
Peggy

Dear Peggy and everybody,

We came to this country from the Soviet Union in 1974, where anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism were a part of everyday reality. Both before and after the Communist Revolution, anti-Semitism was orchestrated by the state and with active participation of the Russian Orthodox Church.. Personally, we encountered hatred toward us as Jews on a regular basis.

We know only too well the power of the Christian anti-Semitism. We encountered its ugly face on innumerous occasions during our life in the former Soviet Union. Even here in the United States we had sad experiences, when, for example, some of our otherwise good Christian friends, would tell us with determination that as long as we remain Jewish we will definitely go to hell.

Therefore, with such an experience, we could fully appreciate the greatest moment of our lives, when for the first time we had an opportunity to participate in the Summit of the Christians United for Israel in Washington. In our best dreams we could not imagine that we would ever be among so many wonderful people of Christian faith who are so passionately and unapologetically professed their support for the Jewish people and to the State of Israel.

During our life in the United States we did our best to speak out for the Jewish people and the State of Israel in different Jewish organizations but never could imagine that we have such a sincere and great support among the Christians of America. All of a sudden we were among many representatives of millions of Christians who expressed their determination to treat the Jews and Israel as real friends in our common human destiny. Because of the CUFI we have an objective reason to believe in the greater future for the Jewish nation.

Vladimir and Marina Tsesis

As Christians, we must realize God's NEVER ENDING love for the Jewish people. The church of Jesus Christ, was never meant to abandon them or persecute them, yet this is exactly what history tells us Christianity has done. God made a promise to Abraham in the very beginning that stands firm in the heart of God today. In Genesis 12:3 (NKJV) we read: "I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."

I am not motivated to love the Jewish people or support Israel out of a desired to be blessed or a fear of being cursed. I am motivated to love them because God loves them dearly. I am motivated to love them because through them Jesus our Savior came and through them we have all the scripture and knowledge of God that instructs our heart today. I am motivated to love them because they are precious to God and He has them very much in His heart and plan. They are brothers and sisters to me! And "Love never fails!"

Psalm 122:6 (NKJV)"Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you."

Standing With Israel

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

I recently returned from our Annual Christians United for Israel (CUFI)Washington DC Summit with over 7,000 in attendance from around the country and world. I am the Minnesota State Director for CUFI. Today's post was written from a Jewish friend who has come to appreciate the friendship of CUFI to Israel and the Jewish people.

"Standing With Israel"
by Peggy Shapiro

"Where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried." This famous pledge by Ruth, a young Moabite widow, to her Israelite mother-in-law Naomi is such a moving declaration of loyalty that it is frequently cited in marriage ceremonies.

It was also frequently repeated at the three-day (July 18-20) Christians United for Israel (CUFI) Summit in Washington D.C. When Glenn Beck, the keynote speaker at the culminating Summit banquet, quoted that biblical pledge of friendship, five thousand Christians leapt to their feet in praise and affirmation, and I, a Jew, a child of Holocaust survivors, was moved to tears by this army of unshakeable friends.

It was my third CUFI Summit and there were many changes in an organization which has grown to over 700,000 in its short six years of existence. In addition to the larger halls, greater number of students (over 500), and more lobbying appointments with Congress, there was a deepened message of commitment to Israel, the homeland of the Jewish people. The other Summits also had biblical themes including "And I will bless those that bless you [Israel] and curse the one who curses you. "Book of Genesis, Chapter 12, Verse 1-3. The passage challenges individual Christians and the nation as a whole to be a blessing to Israel if the United States is to continue as the most blessed country for another 200 years and warns that the day America abandons Israel, America will begin its descent. There are clear rewards for supporting Israel.

There is no reward, in this life or the next, expected in Ruth's pledge to her mother-in-law. In fact, Ruth knew full well that what she was doing posed risks, yet she was firm in her determination to follow her mother-in-law and cling to the faith she had adopted. The Christians who assembled at the Summit and made their heartfelt pledge to protect and stand with Israel did so out of unconditional love and with no expectations of rewards.

They acknowledge what so many refuse to see: Jews and Christians face the same enemies and their destinies are bound today as never before. What begins with the Jews doesn't end with the Jews. Today I read about Yousef Nadarkhani, a 32 year-old Iranian evangelical pastor, who had been commanded by the Iranian regime to renounce his Christian faith or face execution. Nadarkhani's dooming sentencing is only the latest occurrence in the Islamic Republic's aggressive and heightened attack on the Christian population. It is not just Iran. USA Today reports that "The single most dangerous thing in the world to be, right now, is a Christian in a Muslim country."

Those who are attempting to erase Jewish history from the land of Israel are also bent on eliminating the Christian presence. In1995. Bethlehem, the most identifiably Christian town, had a Christian population of 80 percent. Today with a population of under 30 percent Christians, Bethlehem has, for the first time in over two thousand years, lost its Christian majority. The same changes have taken place in two other famously Christian towns, Nazareth and Jerusalem.

The story's the same in Egypt, Iraq and elsewhere in the Mideast. The only place in the region where the Christian population is growing is in Israel.

Just as Ruth, Christians United for Israel pledge their loyalty clear-eyed about the realities of the hostilities they can encounter and expecti no rewards for their act of love. However, the story of Ruth and Naomi does not end with a declaration of loyalty. With Naomi's guidance, Ruth remarries and has a son. Naomi goes from feeling isolated to the joy of holding a grandchild in her arms. And Ruth's son Oved becomes the father of Jesse, whose youngest son is David, the beloved king of all the Jewish people. Years later Jesus, a descendant of David, is born in Bethlehem.

Without Ruth, Jewish history could not continue. And Christian history could not begin. CUFI stands with Israel in an ultimate pledge of loyalty, and without that pledge, Jewish and Christian destinies would be more vulnerable.

The Power You Need to Change!

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

2 Cor 3:18 “And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”

Every human being was created with the desire to experience change. People desire it and are afraid of it at the same time. One of the biggest fears of change is the fear of the inability to make changes. The universal change that the spirit of all men yearn and cry out for even though all do not recognize it, is to be reconciled to God by receiving the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

From there, the ongoing desire for change every Christian experiences is to become Christ-like. The pursuit of becoming like Jesus - to conform our character, our heart and our purpose to His - is a lifelong quest but one that always stirs continuing desire for good and godly change. This is good and it is from God.

The other ongoing inward desire for change that every person yearns for is to participate in the supernatural. I'm not kidding. This desire is within every human being whether it's understood or not. You can see this truth as clear as day in 2 Peter 1:3-4, "God's divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises, so that through them you may PARTICIPATE IN THE DIVINE NATURE and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires."

Escaping the evil desires that are in this world is only possible by participating in the divine nature - in the supernatural - through faith. Why do the people in this world spend hundreds of billions of dollars dealing with weight loss, chemical addiction, gambling addiction, sexual addiction and on an on? Because they are unable to control themselves in these areas. Satan has power over those in this world that have not surrendered their lives to God through Jesus Christ.

I just heard a report that said that 98 percent of all overweight people that lose weight, gain it back. Another report said that 80 - 90 percent of all criminals released from jail offend again. Studies show that most people with addictions are tormented by them all their life. Why is that? Because without God, real and meaningful change doesn't happen. Why? Because a person remains in Satan's power. God wants to rescue them from Satan's power - from the grip that keeps them in his clutches and that keeps them powerless to make lasting change. Colossians 1:13 addresses this saying "For God has RESCUED US FROM SATAN'S POWER of darkness and has brought us into the kingdom of His Son Jesus whom He loves."

The Bible says that Satan's power over us becomes a "stronghold." That could best be understood as a wrong desire that we just can’t seem to break or get lasting control over. There are negative desires that have power over people. These negative desires or strongholds are broken only with God's power. You may say, "But Pastor Tim, I know people that have gone to groups and overcome these addictions." They may have gotten some control over their flesh but the battle over these wrong desires remains within them like a caged wild animal that wants to break out. They often feel like they are living with a tormenting demon. This is why alcoholics always consider themselves alcoholics. This is why alcoholics, sex offenders, criminals, liars, and law-breakers repeat their offences over and over again. Without the power of God, those core desires aren't changed and are usually repeated again somewhere in their life. Wherever wrong desire is, the supernatural power of God is needed. No wonder our spirit yearns for it.

Today’s Fresh Manna says, “and we are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” Only through the supernatural help of God can wrong desires be removed and replaced with good desires. That is a continuing change that everyone desires but few understand it's availability and seek God for it.

Jesus said, “Without me you can do nothing.” Once that truth becomes your reality and you continuously lean upon it, you will immediately begin to draw His supernatural strength and help.

How do we begin to lean on God and draw that strength? By learning on what God says about you and then agreeing with it. Philippians 4:5 says, “Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.” If God instructs us to be moderate, then we can. If you’ve shown behavior other than moderation, it’s time to say, “I am not addictive or a slave to anything. God says I am to show moderation- that means I can! I am moderate in Jesus name.” Let that be the ongoing confession of your heart and mouth spoken repeatedly in every situation until you see change begin to take root in you. That verse finishes “The Lord is at hand.” What does that mean? The picture it paints in its original Greek form is that there is a hand to grasp your hand as one giving aid and strength. That is the supernatural power of God. If you apply your faith and walk it out, you will see God there to help you.

Apply this to any scripture that speaks of what you should change toward and you can “…walk in God’s divine nature and escape the corruption in this world caused by evil desires!” As you do, supernatural transformation will come in an ever increasing way that eventually becomes evident to all! Change is good! Godly change is supernatural! Go for it!

Don’t Let Your Joy Be Extinguished

Fresh Manna
by Pastor Tim Burt

One of the great challenges in any person’s life - Christian or not – is to try to stay upbeat when the circumstances of life are trying to beat you down. Many people (me included) know how to put on a good face when things do not feel so good inside. In my 14 year airline career, I would often fly on 747, an aircraft with about 400 plus seats. I enjoyed greeting people so I would frequently stand at what was called “the boarding door” where the passengers would board the aircraft. I’d put on a big smile and greet all 400 plus people on the way in and say good-bye and thank them for joining us on the way out. There were occasions were I did this twice in one day. Sometimes my face hurt from smiling so much. I think I built up pretty good facial “smile muscles” if there is such a thing.

Now I am just like anyone else. I have days where things go less than desirable – days that could even feel downright discouraging. But, I hated when that discouragement tried to control me and ruin my day. I did all that I could to turn those kinds of days around. I would have never been able to do that without the help of Gods’ Word and His Holy Spirit. There were a couple of powerful lessons the Holy Spirit taught me through the Word, that helped me stay on the victory side so that I could overcome the discouragement that would occasionally attempt to creep in.

First I learned that my mind is like a muscle. 1 Peter 1:13 says, “Therefore gird up the loins of your mind…” The picture painted here from the original Greek is to tighten your belt or exercise and get in shape. The Lord spoke to my heart early on in my Christian walk and said, “Tim, I am going to tell you something and I don’t ever want you to forget it. Your mind belongs to you – not the devil. You think that the random thoughts that go through your mind are beyond your ability to control. That is not true. Your mind belongs to you to think my thoughts and to glorify me.” Then the Lord brought me to 2 Cor. 10:4-5 to confirm this truth. “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down imaginations and arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…”

Learning that I could have control over my thought-life and that I could cast out the thoughts that were contrary to God’s Word was one of the most powerful and life changing revelations I had ever experienced. I would definitely have to “gird up the loins of my mind.” I discovered that it wasn’t easy but it could be done with God’s help. It was like exercise in that it was work! But after months of discerning ungodly thoughts and casting them out, I started gaining absolute control of my mind. It was like I had a filter that instinctively sorted through thoughts that would come. Now my mind is "girded up." The devil may try to steer my imagination to a wrong place, buy the Holy Spirit will help me get it right back to where it should be and promptly!

Secondly, the Lord helped me think upon today’s Fresh Manna verse and it also revolutionized my walk with God. It says, “Life itself was in Jesus, and this life gives light to everyone. The light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.” (John 1:4-5) I didn’t like discouragement. I didn’t like feeling or looking downcast. I didn’t like thinking negative things. Obviously Jesus didn’t either. It says, “Life was in Him and this life gives light to everyone.”I wanted to be filled with His light-giving life. Jesus wasn’t the picture of despair. He was the picture of one who brought truth, love, hope, and encouragement to everyone. He was like a light in a dark place. The verse continues saying exactly that - "the light shines through the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

Those words become my words and foundational to my daily experience. Darkness can never extinguish it.” If I kept my heart full of God’s promises, hope, love, and encouragement, I would shine with light and darkness could never extinguish it. This would help me carry a real smile – not just put on a plastic face on a bad day. And the circumstances and negative things going on around me could not extinguish them or me. To the contrary, my light would help extinguish them.

This beats discouragement. This beats plastic smiles. This is the smile of God. Job knew this light, this smile, and this incredible power to influence people. He said in Job 29:24 “When I smiled at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them.” Negatives circumstances tried to prevail in his life. I guess he knew the secret of God that helped turn them around – that could not extinguish God’s light in His life.

Smiling was something required in my job. That was okay because smiling is something wonderful – it is a light that shines. When there is substance behind that smile, it becomes the “life that gives light to everyone.”

What revelation! My mind and thoughts were mine to be governed by God’s Word and promise - not by discouragement and circumstances. And as I carried God’s hope, promise, love and encouragement in my heart, I could be like Jesus – the one who “gives light to everyone.”

Put the light of Jesus behind your smile today!
