Have you ever wanted to punch your friend? I have! Why? Because he did something that ticked me off. Friends do that some times – including me. I know I’ve ticked off my friends at one time or another. Did I do it on purpose? Of course not. Few people intend to make people they love mad. But, it does happen.
When it happens, I don't blow off my friend or banish him from my friend list just because he made me mad. Do I feel like banishing him? Maybe just for a moment but that's just the emotion of the moment. I also know he is my friend and you can’t throw friends under the bus because they blow it. Even if they make you really mad! They make mistakes and deserve forgiving - Yes even when they’ve ticked you off more than once.
God imparts important friend wisdom for us to hold on to at times when we want to punch our friends such as:
1. Matthew 5:7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy. I better give an abundance mercy because I know I need an abundance of it.
2. Hosea 2:23 And I will have mercy on who has not obtained mercy. God gives mercy to those that don’t deserve it. I will too because there are times where I have been a jerk and haven’t deserved mercy but got it!
3. Proverbs 18:24 There are "friends" who destroy each other, but a real friend sticks closer than a brother. Real friendship takes work and anyone in a friendship must work to keep out petty offenses. This is the “sticks closer than a brother” part. You have to work at it.
4. Proverbs 27:6 Wounds from a friend are better than many kisses from an enemy. Enemies are out to get you but friends are like boys playing with b-b guns – every once in a while they forget what they are doing and shoot you with one. But you survive.
So, the last time a friend ticked me off, it took me a few minutes to work past it and it helped when he said he was sorry. I believe him. And if I find out later he wasn’t sincere, I’ll shoot him with a b-b gun and tell him I’m sorry after. Just kidding….
Proverbs 17:9 He who covers over an offense promotes love…
